Caviar Spoon

It's Essential For Serving This Exquisite Delicacy

If you have enough money to buy the luxury roe, then you might as well invest in a nice caviar spoon to serve it.

The ambiance created by serving caviar at an affair, whether it be celebratory or entertaining a guest of honor, might be broken if you serve the expensive roe with a plastic spoon, so care should be taken to make sure that you purchase the correct serving utensil.

The serving utensil should be as elegant as the rest of the gourmet food served.

There are many types of materials used in making this type of utensil to serve your expensive roe.  The materials used for making these special spoons are chosen for a specific purpose, in that they are non-reactive materials.

If a silver or metal material reacts to the roe, it supposedly changes the flavor, making it bitter or metallic tasting.

Therefore, you need to prevent oxidation, and buy servers made from horn, bone, glass, Mother of Pearl, gold, or gold-plated.

The caviar spoon is carved from any of these materials using a fretsaw, which is able to carve intricate and tight curves, and is similar to a coping saw.  The spoon is from three to five inches in length, and has a small shallow bowl, while the head is oval or paddle shaped.  It is designed to hold a very small amount that can be transferred to a small cracker or square of toast.

Natural horn is very popular because of its availability and price, along with glass.  Bone is somewhat harder to find, and is a bit more expensive.

The Mother of Pearl and gold  caviar spoons are the most elite, and the highest priced.

Mother of Pearl, or Nacre, is made from the inner layer of mollusk, or oyster shell.  It has an opalescent look, and is beautiful on a serving tray.  It is noted for its chemically inert qualities, meaning that it cannot transfer or affect the flavor of the roe.  Mother of Pearl  is the most traditional serving utensil.  It must be handled with care, and washed in warm soap and water to avoid chipping.

Your caviar should be prepared, presented, and served in an elegant fashion.

The roe needs to be iced, so a small glass bowl in a larger serving bowl or tray of ice should keep it between 28 to 30 degrees.  Take it out of the refrigerator just minutes before serving, and it will be at the correct temperature.

When choosing utensils to serve with, decide whether you will have one communal utensil for all to use, or individual spoons.  A communal server is not offensive, because it is touching only the roe, and the surface of the cracker or toast you are spooning it onto.

A Mother of Pearl spoon with your silver serving tray of ice, and glass bowl of caviar would look beautiful, and you do not have the additional expense of buying them individually.

If you are going to the trouble of serving this expensive delicacy, you really need to invest in a nice caviar serving utensil for your guests.  Various types and styles are sold on the internet and in gourmet food stores.  Do not neglect to find an elegant serving utensil for your elegant evening.

If you can afford to buy the caviar, you can afford to dress up the table with an exquisite spoon.
